Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Nassau County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) are pleased to announce the First Annual Safety Fair for Families set to take place April 28th and 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Wantagh Park, located at 1 King Road, Wantagh, just south of Merrick Road, west of the Wantagh State Parkway. The Safety Fair is free to the public and will feature family fun, giveaways and free raffles. County Executive Mangano will be speaking at the Safety Fair for Families at Noon on April 28th and April 29th.
“I am pleased to be able to host the First Annual Safety Fair for Families because it provides community members with an opportunity to access the variety of resources that are available to them,” said County Executive Mangano. “I strongly encourage families to attend this event and not only have a great time, but also learn a variety of safety procedures should you need them.”
Demonstrations and giveaways will cover a number of public safety topics including Boater and Swimmer Safety, Fire Safety, Traffic Safety, ‘Stranger Danger,’ Gun Safety, and Emergency Preparedness.
County, State, and Federal Agency participation includes New York State Police, Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County Firefighters Museum, Nassau County Parks Department, Nassau County Department of Health, National Weather Service, Nassau County Traffic Safety, and the Nassau County Community Emergency Response Team.
OEM Commissioner Craig Craft stated that, “hurricane Irene tested our county with a severity not experienced in recent times. For the first time in Nassau County history, a mandatory evacuation effecting 400,000 of the county’s 1.3 million residents was issued by County Executive Ed Mangano. Included was the first ever evacuation of an entire hospital and six long-term healthcare facilities located in the predicted surge zone. This feat was accomplished through the intense efforts of the Nassau County Department of Health, Nassau County Police Department and many volunteers. The combined efforts of all resulted in zero storm related deaths.”
Commissioner Craft is dedicated to engaging and educating both the residents and businesses of the county to think and plan for the worst. With this in mind, we are pleased to bring together numerous agencies and businesses to better educate and prepare adults and children on what to do before being confronted with a disaster. We encourage residents to assemble emergency go-kits, have a plan in place for themselves and their families, and be aware of those with special needs such as seniors or those with disabilities.

The Office of Emergency Management coordinates the County’s efforts before and during natural, technological, and civil hazards.
