Mangano: Games for the Physically Challenged to Start Tomorrow

Mangano’s Effort Saves the Games for the Third Year in a Row

Uniondale, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced today that the Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged will take place as scheduled this year from Thursday, May 30th through Saturday, June 1st at the Mitchel Athletic Complex and Nassau Community College.

In 2011 after New York State announced plans to eliminate all funding for the Empire State Games, County Executive Mangano formed the Committee to Save the Games.  The Committee successfully reached its fundraising goal due to the generosity of local businesses, schools, and citizens in the community.

Opening Ceremonies will take place on Thursday, May 30th at the Mitchel Athletic Complex from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Competition and demonstrations are Friday and Saturday at Mitchel Athletic Complex and Nassau Community College.  Athletes ranging in age from 5 to 21, who face a variety of disabilities, will compete in track, field, slalom, swimming, wheelchair basketball and table tennis.  Closing Ceremonies will take place on Saturday, June 1st, at Nassau Community College, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Chief Deputy County Executive Rob Walker will act as Master of Ceremonies to officially open the 29th annual Games. Clinton Brown, former athlete, will be the keynote speaker.

“Three years ago Nassau County, along with many generous sponsors, stepped up to save these Empire State Games,” Mangano said. “I looked around at all of those smiling faces, I was reminded of what the Games were all about – athletes ready to savor victory and share in the thrill of competition. It was important that they continue, for, as a spectator, I witnessed the joy in young faces and the value of tradition these Games bring to so many families.”

Mangano thanked all of the sponsors, for helping to make these games possible. He also thanked the volunteers, coaches, parents and families who have chosen “to help, guide, nurture, prepare and encourage our athletes to participate in such an inspirational sporting event.”

“Each of our athletes is an inspiration in courage and commitment, to achieve his or her own personal best,” he said. “Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps said, “You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get. I hope that you will take that advice with you, not just here at the games, but also through life.”
