Meet several of the players from Nassau’s newest professional sports team, the Cosmos; then take an exercise or Yoga class, perhaps; or join in on a healthy cooking demonstration.
Participate in all these activities and more – for free – at Nassau County’s biggest ever Health & Wellness Fair, being held this Sunday, Aug 18 at Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano welcomes dozens of vendors from across virtually every health and wellness industry to the event, geared to help residents get on the road to a healthier lifestyle.
Bethpage Federal Credit Union recently came on board as a sponsor of the Fair, joining Fidelis Care, Northshore LIJ, Winthrop Hospital, Hofstra University and L.A. Fitness.
The Fair will run from 10am to 4pm and include activities for the whole family.
Veterans will be able to learn about a myriad of benefits and services they’re entitled to, from groups like Veterans Protected Inc., Boots on the Ground, Semper4soldiers and 9-1-1 Veterans. Blizzard Camaro, which provides a wide range of services for veterans and their families, will display their vehicles at the event which will take place at 1 Charles Lindbergh Blvd in Uniondale, across from the Cradle of Aviation.
County Executive Mangano will launch the County’s Behavioral Health Awareness Campaign at the fair. Stop by their booths and learn how of mental, physical and spiritual health and illnesses often co-exist, and learn where to go for help.
Overdose Prevention training in the use of the life-saving medication, Narcan, will be provided at 1pm, at the Behavioral Health Awareness booth. Free life-saving Narcan kits will be given out to trainees over the age of 18. No medical training is necessary to administer Narcan and, it can and has, saved the lives of people overdosing on Heroin or prescription painkillers.
Learn how to handle your Diabetes or other Chronic Health Conditions; take advantage of free dental screenings for your children. Have your Blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose tested and learn about cancer prevention. The tests are free, and there are no co-pays. Get the results while you wait.
Free raffles start at 11am and go throughout the day. First prize is a flat screen TV,
Other Health & Wellness Fair participants include NUMC, United Healthcare, American Heart Association and Herbal Life. NY Blood Center will hold a blood drive at the event.
North Shore LIJ and Winthrop-University Hospital will offer free health screenings to attendees. An assortment of health and life insurance companies will be there to talk about what they can offer, with both private and government-sponsored coverage; Hofstra University’s Department of Health Professions will present health promotion and disease prevention information and activities. Bethpage Federal Credit Union will describe their spectrum of services, including home loans and mortgages;
Island Harvest and Long Island Cares will be giving away non-perishable food items to those in need; OMG Photo Booth will display their new-wave interactive photography system and give you the photos, for free.
The first two workshops of the day will be Healthy Food Demonstrations by LL Dent Restaurant at 10:15 and 10:45am. County Executive Mangano will make opening remarks at 11:30am, followed by Dr. Lawrence Eistenstien, MD, Nassau County Commissioner of Health. Mangano will announce the winner of the raffle for the big screen t.v.
At 12 noon, there will be a workshop entitled: Diabetes Prevention & Staying Healthy With Diabetes, given by Lynn Chimon, Director of the Diabetes Education Center at Winthrop. At that same time, a ZUMBA class will be given in the fitness tent.
At 1pm, Dr. Bruce Rutkin MD – a North Shore-LIJ Cardiologist – will discuss Heart Health. Fairway Market will do a Healthy Food Demonstration and a pain management specialist will give a 45-minute Narcan (overdose Prevention) training. A PILATES class will be given in the fitness tent at 1pm.
At 3pm, Dr. Diana Contreras, MD – a North Shore-LIJ OB/GYN – will speak about women’s health issues. And a Yoga class will be given in the fitness tent.
