MANGANO HONORS ALEXANDER’S ANGELS DURING DOWN SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH

Mineola, NY- To heighten awareness regarding the contributions and needs of individuals with Down syndrome, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and the developmental disabilities provider community will recognize October as Down Syndrome Awareness Month.  County Executive Mangano will honor Alexander’s Angels, the tireless volunteer organization that works hard toward its goal of a world where individuals with Down syndrome are not defined by their disability, but by their individuality.

County Executive Mangano stated, “Each October for the past seven years, Alexander’s Angels has sponsored a ‘Long Island Buddy Walk’ to support Down syndrome advocacy, service, and research organizations.  Alexander’s Angels has organized the Buddy Walk® on Long Island since 2007.  The funds that are raised benefit local programs, services and Down syndrome cognitive research, as well as local and national advocacy and awareness initiative that benefit all individuals with Down syndrome.”

The Buddy Walk®, was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.  According to the National Down Syndrome Society, people with Down syndrome are living longer than ever before.  Children with Down syndrome are often fully included in social and educational settings and increasingly go on to graduate high school and attend post-secondary education programs. While placement into competitive employment remains a challenge, the situation has improved and adults with Down syndrome have attained a variety of positions, bringing enthusiasm, reliability and dedication to their jobs.
