By Eden Laikin

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano had the honor of swearing in the new Nassau County Fire Commissioner Wednesday night – a longtime member of the West Hempstead Fire Department. The ceremony, at West Hempstead’s firehouse on Hempstead Turnpike, also honored and recognized the outgoing Fire Commission Chairman.

Sworn in was Ronald Magarie, who joined the West Hempstead Fire Company in 1975 where he rose up through the ranks as a Firematic officer – 2nd and 1st Lieutenant, Junior Captain, Senior Captain, 2nd Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief and Chief of Department in 1996. Most recently, Magarie was elected as Fire Commissioner of the 7th Battalion and served as the Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Fire Commission.

“Ron, thank you for your years of brave and selfless service and I look forward to working with you in your new capacity as Chairman of the Nassau County Fire Commission,” County Executive Mangano said.

“We are also here this evening to honor and thank outgoing Fire Commissioner, Walter Weltner, for his service and dedication to protecting our Nassau County communities,” Mangano went on to say. “Walter, you have been an influential member of the Nassau County Fire Commission for over 30 years, on behalf of the 1.3 million residents of Nassau County I thank you for your service, dedication, bravery and leadership.”

Weltner joined the Valley Stream Fire Department in 1982 and rose up through the ranks, serving as its Captain for seven years. He also served as the Secretary of the Fire Commission in 2011 and Vice Chairman of the Fire Commission in 2012.
