As he stood with veterans from various branches of the military yesterday, outside the Veterans Memorial in Eisenhower Park, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said that on this Memorial Day, he thanks each and every veteran who has served our nation. And, he asked those gathered for the ceremony do the same whenever they see someone in uniform.
“I am honored to join you here today as we remember the brave members of the United States Armed Forces who made the supreme sacrifice for our nation,” Mangano said. “We stand in awe of their courage and selflessness to protect our freedom and American way of life.”
He continued: “As we remember those who have passed in our service, we also honor those who serve today, selflessly and voluntarily, leaving their homes and their families, to keep us all safe.”
“God bless you, your families, our brave men and women here and abroad and may He bless these United States of America.”
This year’s program was dedicated to the memory of Rabbi Morton Pomerantz. It began with sounds from the Nassau County Police Department’s Pipe and Drum Band, then an invocation; Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, presentation of wreath, Firing Detail Salute, and the playing of Taps and God Bless America.
After his opening remarks, County Executive Mangano introduced the guest speaker – Marine Corps veteran Lt. Col. Arthur J. Woods. Woods enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1985, was commissioned as a Second Lt. in 1994, a Captain in 1999 and Lt. Colonel in 2009. He has served at many stateside posts as well as in Turkey, Japan and South East Asia and two deployments to Iraq. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal and Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
After the ceremony, United Veterans Organization – which consists of 31 Nassau County veterans groups – dedicated the Air Force Association Monument.
