Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano this week judged BBQ dishes of 8 fire departments and a group of Nassau Police Medics.
First place honors went to Westbury Fire Department, with second place honors to Malverne Fire Department; and Syosset Fire Department took third place, as friends, family and fellow firefighters cheered them on.
As with every year the contest is held, the food was served up with a message to Long Islanders about summer BBQ safety: Stay Safe While Grilling.
The Nassau Firefighters Museum & Education Center hosts the Firefighter BBQ Grilling competition each year, in mid-summer, to determine which teams have the best firehouse chefs. This year, the event was co-hosted by Fairway Market in Westbury, and held in its parking lot. Each team barbeques chicken, hamburgers and ribs and are scored on each dish. The winner is the one with most points, cumulatively.
“They are doing what they do best, showing people how to cook outdoors safely,” Mangano said at the event.
The other fire departments competing were: Bethpage; East Meadow; Oceanside and Rockville Centre.
Judges included Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director/CEO, Girl Scouts of Nassau County; Angela Anton, Anton Community Newspapers Publisher; Vincent Olivieri, Fairway Executive Chef; and Angelo Catalano, Board President of the NCFF Museum
