Nassau County Edward P. Mangano today announced that through a cooperative effort between Island Harvest Food Bank, the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management and Feeding America, welcome relief in the form of 39,000 pounds of surplus MRE’s, or meals ready to eat, are on the way to those people impacted by the recent, devastating floods in South Carolina.
County Executive Mangano stated, “We are pleased to partner with Island Harvest to lend assistance to the rescue response for the many thousands of people affected by the devastating floods in South Carolina. With so many people throughout our nation who helped Long Island cope with the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, it is only fitting that we lend a hand to the people of South Carolina as they struggle to recover.”
Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief charity recently issued an appeal through its network of food banks across the country seeking non-perishable food items for the flood-ravaged sections South Carolina. As a lead organization in disaster preparedness and response, Island Harvest tapped into its’ partnership with the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management and arranged for the surplus MRE’s to be set aside for shipment to the South Carolina National Guard through the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Columbia, South Carolina. In all, 52 pallets of MRE’s, representing 29,900 meals will be arriving on Tuesday, October 20th.
