Mangano offers hope for those struggling from addiction

As part of Nassau’s continuing efforts to battle the Opiate epidemic and save lives, County Executive Ed Mangano announced the launch of a new treatment initiative to wean an addicted person off of Heroin or prescription painkillers, on an “outpatient” basis, and in doing so, then prepare the Opiate-free individual for “A Shot at Life.”
Two County-funded treatment agencies now provide “Ancillary Withdrawal Management” services, at their Hempstead and Hicksville facilities, and can subsequently offer the detoxed client the new drug known as Vivitrol, which acts to block drug cravings and the users’ high.
Ancillary Withdrawal Management services (AWS) are an outpatient alternative to inpatient detoxification for the treatment of mild to moderate withdrawal from substances of abuse. Symptom relief, and/or addiction medications for withdrawal are available.
“While insurance companies too often deny reimbursement for individuals to go “inpatient” for detox services, and there are few detox beds available here, we now provide the medically supervised services on an outpatient basis,” County Executive Mangano said. “This drug epidemic – likely the deadliest one in history – requires that we continue to think outside the box for new solutions.”
Counseling Services at EDNY, located in Hempstead and CN Guidance & Counseling Services in Hicksville – both NYS OASAS Certified Substance Use Disorder Outpatient Treatment Programs – now offer medically supervised outpatient detoxification services, for Opiate–dependent people. Both accept most private insurance and Medicaid, as well as self-pay.
EDNY has developed a streamlined and expedited admission to its outpatient clinical services, which include individual and group therapy, psychiatric or vocational services as needed; and 24-hour emergency access to medical staff. Call 516-640-5471 for a phone screening with a medical staff member. EDNY has Ancillary Withdrawal capabilities 6 days per week. The client will be scheduled to begin the Ancillary Withdrawal service within 24 hours. If medical staff is unavailable, please leave a voicemail. Messages will be checked and responded to by medical staff that day or the following morning, to facilitate admission to the service or answer any questions. For any other information, call their main number at (516) 481-0052 ext. 10.
CN Guidance & Counseling Services, Addiction Recovery Treatment Services – has also begun Ancillary Withdrawal and support services, and their Medical Staff can provide addiction medicine (Suboxone Inductions/Vivitrol) to clients within their outpatient treatment program providing assessments, individual and group therapy, vocational counseling, psychiatric services and 24-hour emergency access to medical staff. The Program also offers free family education and support groups. For confidential inquiries and intake appointments, call 516-822-6111 ext 209 – from 9:30am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
