Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today commended County officials and economic development experts for implemented economic policies that have frozen County property taxes for five years and helped create more than 25,000 local jobs – both resulting in Nassau County leading New York State with the lowest unemployment. Yesterday, the New York State Department of Labor released statistics indicating a drop in unemployment to 4.2% this past January, down from 7% in 2010, further demonstrating how local economic policies are working when compared state and nationwide (4.9% unemployment).
“My administration knows that high taxes kill jobs and depress the local economy. That is why I repealed the Home Energy Tax and worked with the Legislature to freeze property taxes for five years,” said County Executive Mangano. “Our taxpayer conscious policies have sent a clear message to employers to create local jobs. Nassau County now has the lowest unemployment rate in the State of New York and that is evidence of our economic policies which have created unprecedented job opportunities for residents.”
County Executive Mangano and his economic development team have helped create and retain more than 25,000 private sector jobs in Nassau County. Since taking office, the Mangano administration helped attract new employers to Nassau County including the International Headquarters of Hain Celestrial and medical manufacturer Supreme Screw, while helping other local employers expand their operations and add jobs to local offices. Additionally, an independent economic analysis performed by Camoin Associates in 2015 indicates the film industry generated $533.6 million in economic benefit for Nassau County while employing 1,773 annual jobs through the production of more than 535 films.
To help residents find employment, County Executive Mangano hosted several private sector job fairs that collectively drew thousands of employers and 30,000 job seekers. For those residents unable to attend the job fairs and employers unable to advertise local job opportunities, County Executive Mangano launched the application NassauWorks which connects job seekers with over 19,000 local employment opportunities at no cost to the employer.
