Mineola, NY –Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced free child safety seat checks will take place on Wednesday, September 28th from 4pm – 6pm at North Hempstead Town Hall, located at 220 Plandome Road in Manhasset. Certified child passenger safety technicians will inspect car seats for proper installation and advise parents and caregivers on how to choose the right car seats and install them properly into their vehicles.
“You can never predict or control what other drivers might do or how the weather might change the safety of a roadway,” said County Executive Mangano. “The best way to protect your children is to put them in the right car seats for their age and size and to use those seats correctly on every trip. By having your car seat checked, parents and caregivers can feel confident their children are as safe as possible when on our roadways.”
Under New York State’s Child Restraint Law, a child must remain in an appropriate child restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle until the age of 8. An appropriate child restraint system is one that meets the child’s size and weight recommended by the manufacturer. A child restraint system may be a child safety seat, harness, vest or a booster seat.
In New York State, nearly 8,500 children from birth to 15 years of age are treated yearly in hospitals for injuries from a motor vehicle crash. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), three out of every four car seats are not used correctly. Failure to read and carefully follow the installation instructions included with the car seat as well as those in the vehicle owner’s manual can lead to incorrect installation, exposing a child passenger to grave risk of serious injury or death in a crash.
Last week, County Executive Mangano teamed up with State Senator Todd Kaminsky to hold free child car seat safety checks on the south shore.
Parents and caregivers can also attend car seat inspections or check-up events held throughout the year. For more information about child passenger safety, and to make an appointment to have your seat checked, contact the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board at (516) 571-9664.
