Mangano Announces Free Drug Treatment Forum And Resource Fair

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that a free Educational Forum and Resource Fair will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2016 from 6-9pm at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, where the newest medication-supported treatment program for Opiate and alcohol addiction will be discussed by medical professionals. Doctors, psychiatrists, addictions professionals, individuals in recovery from addiction and their family members, and members of the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) will be on hand to discuss this program.

“There is no miracle cure for addiction,” said County Executive Mangano. “The miracle lies in the people who have overcome their drug dependency to achieve sobriety. Extended-Release Naltrexone can help those miracles happen. I invite residents to attend this free event and learn more about our new drug and alcohol treatment program known as ‘A Shot at Life’.”

‘A Shot at Life’ combines a once-a-month, extended release injection of a medication called Naltrexone with counseling. Naltrexone is covered by most insurers, Medicaid and Medicare. It is non-narcotic, non-addictive and cannot be abused or diverted. The FDA approved Naltrexone in 2006 to treat alcohol dependency and then in 2010 to prevent relapse to Opiate addiction.

Since launching the ‘Shot at Life’ program in February 2015, the number of treatment facilities that offer Naltrexone in Nassau – and residents who are on Naltrexone – has more than tripled. The November 17th forum will begin at 6pm with a free Naloxone training for residents. There will also be a resource fair with representatives from most of the treatment agencies in Nassau that offer Naltrexone.
