Mangano Congratulates Seaford Students on Winning LI Robotics Championship

 

Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano congratulated four Seaford students on winning the FIRST LEGO League Long Island Robotics Tournament, sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), and advancing to the World Championships, which will be held in St. Louis in April. County Executive Mangano presented citations to the winners—Sarah Baker, Samuel Baker, Ashley Rice and Jivan Ramesh—on Monday, March 27, at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola, honoring them for their accomplishment.

“I congratulate these talented and hardworking students for their impressive accomplishment in winning the Long Island Robotics Tournament, and making Nassau proud,” said County Executive Mangano. “I wish you luck in the upcoming World Championships.”

The teams were tasked with building motorized Lego robots that completed skill tasks, and proposing ways to improve interactions between humans and animals. The winning team, named the Seaford Sea Lions, built a functional robot, designed a database and website for educating the public about possums, and studied whether education impacts perception of an issue. The Sea Lions, aged 8-14, beat out 39 other teams of children, judged on their technical skills as well as their professionalism and ability to work as a team.
