Summer Safety Tips for Drivers, Cyclists and Pedestrians

County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Acting Police Commissioner Thomas C. Krumpter would like to remind the residents of Nassau County that during the summer season they should be aware of bicyclists, joggers and walkers while traveling on the roadways.

In 2016, from May to September, Nassau County had 144 bicycle accidents with 2 fatalities and 262 pedestrian accidents resulting in 12 fatalities.

The following tips will help to ensure a safe summer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians:

  * Drivers should watch their speed due to the increase of pedestrians and      cyclists, sudden stopping may be necessary.

  • Visibility is diminished due to overgrown trees and bushes creating blind spots while driving.
  • Be aware of large crowds attending outside street fairs, carnivals and concerts.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists should cross at designated crosswalks or intersections.
  • Increase visibility by wearing bright or reflective clothing when walking, jogging or cycling
  • Walk on a sidewalk when possible, if not walk on shoulder facing traffic.
  • Avoid distractions such as electronic devices, including texting and walking
  • Pay attention to all traffic signals.
