Mangano Congratulates New Commander of LI’s US Marine Military Base at Special Ceremony

Garden City, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano joined hundreds of United States Marines and military personnel at the historic 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines base for their “Change of Command” Ceremony on Friday, July 7th in Garden City.  Mangano introduced Lieutenant Colonel James Sweeney as the new Commander of Long Island’s US Marine Military Base. A change of command is a military tradition that represents a formal transfer of authority and responsibility for a unit from one commanding officer to another.

“I congratulate Lieutenant Colonel James Sweeney on his installation as Commander of Long Island’s U.S. Marine Military Base, and thank outgoing Commander Lieutenant Colonel Eduardo Bitanga II, for his years of dedicated service,” said County Executive Mangano. “On behalf of a grateful County, I want to thank all of our Marines for their selfless service and sacrifice. We would not enjoy the freedoms we do here, were it not for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces.”

Founded in 1942, the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines (2/25) is one of the largest U.S. Marines bases in the Northeast. It consists of approximately 1,000 Marines and sailors. They fall under the command of the 25th Marine Regiment and the 4th Marine Division. The 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines participated in the World War II campaigns at Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. The battalion was mobilized in 1990-1991 in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm and in March 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
